On August 17, 2026, New Jersey officially adopted the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) 2024. The adoption includes model codes for building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing subcodes, rehabilitation subcodes and requirements among myriad other elements. The adoption also incorporates the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as the state’s energy subcode, increasing insulation standards for new construction and renovations for smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, and updates fire subcode requirements.

In general, the new requirements are deemed applicable on the effective date of the amendment unless a specific provision states otherwise. Companies with pending projects designed under the 2021 code should be aware of these new requirements and determine if they can meet the compliance grace period for work already authorized through lawful permits or if the project plans need to be revised.

Construction companies should anticipate increased expectations for documentation, coordination, quality control, electronic permitting compliance, and protection of adjoining properties.

Project owners should expect some increase in up-front construction costs with the changes promising reduced project lifecycle costs in exchange.

From enhanced permitting requirements and expanded inspection oversight to new energy, structural, and fire protection standards, the updated code will require project teams to engage earlier and collaborate more closely throughout the construction lifecycle.
